Carnival Club - Notting Hill August 2023

If your child is interested in participating in the famous Notting Hill Carnival, its time to register your interest for our Summer Carnival Camp! This is a four week Mon-Fri programme running from 24th July 2023 - 18th August 2023. The camp offers arts and crafts where children will learn what is required for them to develop their own costume head gear (this may be a mask, hat or other attire), plus learn a choreographed dance that is performed throughout the time we are 'on the road'. The camp is supported with storytelling, music and written/learning so the children have an understanding of the historical folk lore linked to the characters we are performing this year.

Camp is from 9.30am - 4.30pm, with regular breaks throughout the day. packed lunch will need to be provided. Snacks will be on sale each day. children can come with cash or parents can send in a budget (cash or online). The cost of camp includes the carnival costume and related materials for craft work. We have limited places for this camp, so please remember to register early to guarantee a place!

AactionDance Saturday School

Dance

The movement experience at Aaction is based on Africanistic Movement, which is the basis of European Ballet. This form of specialist dance will improve posture and strengthen the whole body, with minimal risk of injury.

The teaching will offer the foundation of Africanistic movement, progressing to choreographed dances, which will be performed at local and National carnivals as well as renowned annual dance events such as the annual ‘Dance around the World’.

Movement is led by the highly qualified and experienced MDC. Please see separate bio.

Crafts

This part of the day will focus on the developing of skills in traditional crafts from our Global ancestors and carnival costume development and production. Using age-appropriate  media such as storytelling and historical facts, we aim to share knowledge of the origins of different dance & movement, as well as understand the history of celebrations and the use of carnival costumes. This will also include the folklore of different characters and customs with variations across countries and continents.

For children participating in any of the carnival opportunities, they will have the opportunity to contribute to their own costume (for instance, make or decorate the masks, if used).

Our crafts are led by a qualified teacher with many years of experience. Please see separate bio.

All staff are qualified for their roles and have an enhanced DBS. They have been recruited using a safer recruitment process.

When is this happening?

Every Saturday morning of term time. The times are 10am – 12.30pm.

Places are limited in each age group, so please ensure you register early to secure your audition/place.
